Như đã biết, một sự kiện có hai thời điểm xuất hiện là sớm và muộn. Nó không thể xuất hiện trước thời hạn sớm nhất (Eij) và cũng không thể xuất hiện sau thời hạn muộn nhất (Lij). Nhưng nó có thể xuất hiện bất kỳ lúc nào giữa hai thời hạn đó. Khoảng thời gian chênh lệch giữa thời hạn sớm và muộn, là thời gian dự trữ của sự kiện (Si).
