Với tổng diện tích gần 70.000 ha, đây là một trong những khu rừng đặc dụng quan trọng của Việt Nam, bao gồm một hệ thống núi cao thuộc dãy Hoàng Liên Sơn, trong đó có đỉnh Fansipan cao 3.143 m được mệnh danh là nóc nhà Đông Dương. Hệ động thực vật phong phú

Từ thị trấn Sa Pa, men theo con đường đèo dốc quanh co khoảng 20 km về hướng tây, du khách sẽ đến với rừng quốc gia với điểm mốc đầu tiên là đèo Ô Quy Hồ hùng vĩ. Từ đây du khách bắt đầu chuyến hành trình khám phá thiên nhiên kỳ thú khi men theo con đường mòn uốn lượn quanh triền núi ở độ cao trên 1.000 m so với mực nước biển.

Dù đã cuối mùa xuân nhưng ở vương quốc của các loài hoa này vẫn còn rất nhiều loài khoe sắc sặc sỡ. Ở đây có nhiều nhất là đỗ quyên, phong lan và hoàng anh, riêng hoa đỗ quyên có tới hai chục loài khác nhau và phong lan thì có hàng trăm loại.

Càng lên cao, bạn sẽ gặp được càng nhiều loại cây lạ. Nếu ở dưới chân núi là các thảm cỏ dày đặc cùng những cây quen thuộc như gạo, mít, rồi pơ mu thì đến độ cao 1.000 m có các cây lá kim ken dày với cây gỗ nhỏ, cây bụi. Lên cao hơn từ 2.000 m thì núi đá được bao phủ bởi loài trúc lùn cùng một số loài cây bụi nhỏ khác. Ở đây gió thổi mạnh, mặt đất lúc thì mờ mịt mây phủ lúc lại quang đãng với nắng chói chang.

Tuy đang sắp vào mùa hè nhưng cảnh sắc thay đổi đôi khi làm cho ta lầm tưởng mình đang ở mùa đông, rồi lại sang xuân, thu chỉ trong một khoảng thời gian ngắn. Điều đặc biệt là cảnh sắc mùa nào cũng đẹp kỳ vĩ và để lại ấn tượng sâu sắc.

Bên cạnh hệ thực vật rừng phong phú, hệ động vật rừng cũng rất đa dạng với các loài thú như vượn đen, hồng hoàng, voọc bạc má, hàng trăm loài chim như đại bàng, trĩ mào đỏ, chim hét mỏ vàng cùng nhiều loài lưỡng cư và bò sát. Trong khi du khách khám phá núi rừng nơi đây luôn mong được gặp và nghe tiếng hót của các loài chim quý hiếm thì rắn rết, đặc biệt là vắt lại là một nỗi sợ hãi ám ảnh.


Không chỉ có cỏ cây, muông thú và núi cao hùng vĩ, rừng quốc gia Hoàng Liên Sơn còn có nhiều thác nước nên thơ, huyền ảo đẹp tựa những bức tranh thủy mặc.

Nằm dưới chân đèo Ô Quy Hồ, thác Bạc là một trong những thác nước cao và đẹp nhất ở Hoàng Liên Sơn (với độ cao

Một dòng thác nữa nổi tiếng với vẻ đẹp hoang sơ là thác Tác Tình, nằm cách thị trấn Sa Pa hơn 20 km về phía tây. Dù chỉ có độ cao chừng 50 m nhưng dòng thác này nằm giữa vùng núi non trùng điệp nên mang một vẻ đẹp nguyên sơ, bí ẩn. Những thác nước đã góp phần tạo nên vẻ quyến rũ đặc biệt của Hoàng Liên Sơn.


Đến Hoàng Liên Sơn, du khách cũng không nên bỏ qua cơ hội tìm hiểu nét đẹp văn hóa truyền thống của cộng đồng các dân tộc Mông, Dao, Giáy, Tày... nơi đây.
