Siêu thị là từ được dịch ra từ các thuật ngữ nước ngoài - "supermarket" (tiếng Anh) hay "supermarché" (tiếng Pháp), trong đó "super" nghĩa là "siêu" và "market" là "thị trường" ("chợ"). Theo Philips Kotler, siêu thị là "cửa hàng tự phục vụ tương đối lớn có mức chi phí thấp, tỷ suất lợi nhuận không cao và khối luợng hàng hóa bán ra lớn, đảm bảo thỏa mãn đầy đủ nhu cầu của người tiêu dùng về thực phẩm, bột giặt, các chất tẩy rửa và những mặt hàng chăm sóc nhà cửa".
