Tính đến ngày 31/3/2012, Việt Nam đã có 212 dự án đầu tư sang Lào, với tổng vốn đầu tư 3,45 tỷ USD. Chỉ tính riêng năm 2011, Viêt Nam đã cấp phép đầu tư 15 dự án sang Lào với tổng vốn đầu tư gần 500 triệu USD. Việt Nam hiện là nhà đầu tư nước ngoài lớn thứ hai tại Lào và Lào giữ vị trí thứ nhất trong tổng số 55 quốc gia và vùng lãnh thổ có hoạt động đầu tư ra nước ngoài của Việt Nam.
Tuy nhiên, điều đáng lo là, theo đánh giá của AVIL, có khoảng 1/3 dự án của Việt Nam đầu tư sang Lào đang triển khai chậm tiến độ. Đã có hiện tượng một số DN nhận dự án, nhưng không triển khai, mà chuyển nhượng cho đối tác thứ ba. Một số DN do năng lực tài chính yếu, thiếu kinh nghiệm, xin quá nhiều dự án cùng một lúc trên nhiều lĩnh vực khác nhau, hoặc dự án vượt quá khả năng quản lý, nên phải bỏ lửng hoặc triển khai cầm chừng.
