Doanh nghiệp (DN) là một tổ chức kinh tế có tên gọi riêng, có tài sản, có trụ sở giao dịch ổn định, được đăng ký kinh doanh theo quy định của pháp luật nhằm mục đích thực hiện các hoạt động sản xuất, cung ứng hàng hóa,dịch vụ cho người tiêu dùng qua thị trường nhằm mục đích sinh lời.
Trong nền kinh tế thị trường, để có thể tiến hành hoạt động SXKD thì các DN cần phải có các yếu tố cơ bản sau: Sức lao động, đối tượng lao động và tư liệu lao động. Để có được các yếu tố này đòi hỏi DN cần phải ứng ra một số vốn nhất định phù hợp với quy mô và điều kiện kinh doanh. Lượng vốn này nhằm đảm bảo cho các yếu tố “đầu vào” của quá trình SXKD như mua sắm nguyên vật liệu, TSCĐ, trả tiền công cho người lao động, và được gọi là VKD của DN.
Do sự tác động của lao động vào đối tượng lao động thông qua tư liệu lao động mà hàng hoá, dịch vụ được tạo ra và tiêu thụ trên thị trường.
