Trên thế giới cũng như ở nước ta, nhiều khóa học trực tuyến đã được tổ chức. Tùy theo mục tiêu và cấp độ đào tạo mà hình thức tổ chức lớp học trực tuyến cũng khác nhau. Tuy nhiên có điểm chung là học viên tham gia học phải được sự cho phép của tổ chức quản lý E-learning.

- Học viên đăng ký là thành viên vào lớp và có thể: xem các thông tin về lịch học, nội dung môn học, danh sách giảng viên, trợ giảng, bạn cùng lớp...

- Truy cập vào khóa học, học viên có thể xem/tải các tài liệu, học liệu dưới dạng HTML, PDF, DOC, SCORM; học liệu dạng SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model): xem trực tiếp trên web E-learning; các tài liệu dạng PDF, HTML, PDF, DOC thông thường tải xuống máy tính cá nhân thuận tiện việc học và lưu trữ.

Sau khi học với tài liệu, học liệu được cung cấp, học viên có thể tham gia các diễn đàn để trao đổi, được giải đáp các thắc mắc về những vấn đề liên quan.

- Trong quá trình học, học viên có thể (hoặc bắt buộc) làm các bài tập trắc nghiệm trực tuyến, đây có thể là các bài luyện tập hoặc bài kiểm tra, thường gặp 2 loại bài tập:

+ Sau khi làm bài, nộp bài bằng cách đăng tải (upload) một tập tin.

+ Làm bài tại chỗ bằng cách điền, đánh dấu vào 1 file (kiểm tra và đánh giá trực tuyến).

- Xem điểm, kết quả trong phần đánh giá học viên.
