Nghiên cứu được tiến hành trong năm 2014 – 2015 tại huyện Bảo Lâm, tỉnh Cao Bằng nhằm minh chứng việc ứng dụng của GIS trong thành lập bản đồ đơn vị đất đai và đưa ra được những lựa chọn cho các loại hình sử dụng đất. Nghiên cứu đã xác định các chỉ tiêu phân cấp gồm loại đất, độ dốc, độ dày tầng đất, thành phần cơ giới và chế độ tưới, từ đó sử dụng các chức năng phân tích không gian của GIS để xây dựng các bản đồ đơn tính và chồng xếp các bản đồ đơn tính đó để xây dựng bản đồ đơn vị đất đai gồm 99 đơn vị đất đai và 1 đơn vị NCR (núi đá có rừng cây). Mỗi LMU thường gồm từ 1 - 3 loại hình sử dụng đất. Các hệ thống sử dụng đất đa dạng về loại cây trồng, kết hợp giữa chuyên lúa, lúa màu và cây công nghiệp ngắn ngày; giữa cây hàng năm trên đất dốc, nông lâm kết hợp và đất trồng rừng.
