Điều 86 của Dự luật về ngày lễ ban

Điều 86 của Dự luật về ngày lễ ban hành ngày 25 tháng 6 năm Showa thứ 41 (năm 1966) đã bổ sung thêm “Ngày hội thể thao” vào danh sách các ngày lễ trong năm của Nhật Bản.


Theo đó, ngày 10 tháng 10 hằng năm được chỉ định là “Ngày hội thể thao” nhằm mục đích: khuyến khích người dân tập thể dục thể thao, rèn luyện sức khỏe và xa hơn là kiến tạo một xã hội tươi sáng, tốt đẹp dành cho mọi người.

Sở dĩ Chính phủ Nhật Bản chọn ngày này là để kỷ niệm những thành tích xuất sắc mà Nhật Bản đã đạt được tại Đại hội Olympic Tokyo năm Showa 39 (năm 1964). Và ngày 10 tháng 10 – ngày khai mạc Thế vận hội năm đó đã được chọn làm ngày nhắc nhở người dân Nhật Bản hiểu rõ hơn tầm quan trọng của thể dục thể thao.

Tuy nhiên, từ năm Heisei thứ 12 (tức năm 2000) trở đi, nhằm tạo điều kiện để người dân được nghỉ ngơi nhiều hơn, Chính phủ đã cho thi hành chính sách “Ngày thứ hai vui vẻ” và “Ngày hội thể thao” được chuyển sang ngày thứ hai của tuần thứ hai trong tháng 10.
