Hiện nay, Việt Nam đang phải đối mặt với thách thức lớn về tình trạng ô nhiễm nguồn nước, đặc biệt là tại các khu công nghiệp và đô thị. Tại các thành phố lớn, lượng nước thải chưa qua xử lý của hàng trăm cơ sở sản xuất công nghiệp xả thẳng ra môi trường là nguyên nhân chính gây ô nhiễm môi trường nguồn nước. Ở khu vực nông thôn, tình trạng ô nhiễm nguồn nước cũng không ngừng gia tăng. Theo thống kê, có 76% số dân đang sinh sống ở nông thôn, là nơi cơ sở hạ tầng còn lạc hậu, phần lớn các chất thải của con người và gia súc không được xử lý nên thấm xuống đất làm cho tình trạng ô nhiễm nguồn nước về mặt hữu cơ và vi sinh vật ngày càng cao. Bên cạnh đó quá trình đô thị hoá diễn ra nhanh chóng, sự gia tăng dân số đã gây áp lực ngày càng lớn đối với tài nguyên nước ở Việt Nam.Người dân sử dụng các loại thuốc bảo vệ thực vật và phân bón hoá học trong sản xuất nông nghiệp đã làm cho nguồn nước ở sông, hồ, kênh, mương bị ô nhiễm.Nước thải sinh hoạt tại các đô thị, khu dân cư có hàm lượng hợp chất hữu cơ cao nhưng chưa được xử lý triệt để trước khi xả vào nguồn nước.Ý thức của người dân còn kém. Việc khắc phục tình trạng ô nhiễm môi trường nước không phải là vấn đề một sớm,một chiều mà nó đòi hỏi cần phải có một chiến lược lâu dài và sự đóng góp công sức của toàn xã hội.Việc tuyên truyền và nâng cao ý thức trách nhiệm của con người về việc thu gom rác đúng nơi quy định. Các doanh nghiêp sản xuất dù ở quy mô lớn hay nhỏ cũng phải đảm bảo được hệ thống xử lý đạt tiêu chuẩn quy định.Điều quan trọng nhất đó chính là chính phủ cần phải quan tâm nhiều hơn cũng như đầu tư xây dựng các dự án cũng cấp nước sạch, hệ thống xử lý nước chất lượng, an toàn hơn. Bảo vệ môi trường và xử lý nguồn nước ô nhiễm mang đến một cuộc sống lành mạnh,an toàn cho hiện tại và thế hệ tương lai.
