Những năm qua, nhiều đô thị nước ta đã được mở rộng về quy mô không gian. Theo đó, dân số cũng như mật độ dân cư tại các khu vực nội đô ngày một tăng cao. Điều đáng quan tâm là quá trình này không diễn ra đồng đều mà chủ yếu tập trung tại các đô thị lớn như Hà Nội và TP Hồ Chí Minh. Ở đây, ngoài khía cạnh tích cực là làm gia tăng tính năng động xã hội của người lao động và thúc đẩy nhanh quá trình đô thị hóa, việc di cư từ nông thôn ra thành thị đã và đang gây áp lực không nhỏ đối với hệ thống cơ sở hạ tầng, dịch vụ xã hội, nhà ở... Một trong những bất cập mà hằng ngày người dân các đô thị lớn phải "chung sống" là nạn kẹt xe, ô nhiễm môi trường. Ngoài ra, tình trạng gia tăng dân số cơ học quá nhanh ở các đô thị lớn cũng khiến công tác quản lý dân cư gặp không ít khó khăn.
