Việt Nam có tiềm năng dầu khí đáng kể. Tiềm năng và trữ lượng dầu khí có khả năng thu hồi của các bể trầm tích Đệ Tam của Việt Nam khoảng 4,300 tỷ tấn dầu quy đổi, trong đó trữ lượng phát hiện là 1,208 tỷ tấn và trữ lượng dầu khí có khả năng thương mại là 814,7 triệu tấn dầu quy đổi. Đến ngày 2/9/2009. Tập đoàn Dầu khí Quốc gia Việt Nam đã đạt mốc khai thác 300 triệu tấn dầu quy đổi. Với sản lượng khai thác dầu khí hàng năm, hiện nay Việt Nam đứng hàng thứ ba ở Đông Nam Á sau Indonesia và Malaysia.

Sản lượng dầu khí khai thác hàng năm ở mức thấp, bình quân khoảng 24 triệu tấn. 5 tháng đầu năm 2012, PVN chỉ khai thác được 10,86 triệu tấn dầu khí. Trong khi đó, trữ lượng khai thác ở Việt Nam đang đứng thứ 4 về dầu mỏ và thứ 7 về khí đốt trong khu vực Châu Á Thái Bình Dương (Theo BP, 2010), đồng thời đứng thứ 25 và 30 trên thế giới. Chính vì vậy, Việt Nam có hệ số trữ lượng/sản xuất (R/P) rất cao, trong đó R/P dầu thô là 32,6 lần (đứng đầu khu vực Châu Á-TBD và thứ 10 thế giới) và R/P khí đốt là 66 lần (đứng đầu Châu Á - TBD và thứ 6 thế giới). Điều này cũng cho thấy tiềm năng phát triển của ngành trong tương lai còn rất lớn
