Atlantic salmon (Atlantic salmon) is considered the "king of fish", an appropriate title for many reasons. They perform spectacular journey in life, migration from freshwater streams as children to feeding grounds in the North Atlantic and returning to spawn. The ability to return the correct stream where they were born to make up the attention and perplexed biologists for hundreds of years. Salmon of the most beautiful types of fish; elongated body, silver colored and beautifully shaped move. They are very strong, is among the active species in the world. More importantly, it is symbolic for clean water, unpolluted flowing into the sea. For those of us who live in the area near the Connecticut River, the Atlantic salmon is a sign of pure and natural water flow is restored. Salmon spawning Atlantic coming to nest (known as REDD) in autumn. They dig holes in the gravel bottom of streams by pushing them to the side and up and down by the body and tail. To the cheers of the males, they lay their eggs in the nest. Eggs in a nest over winter and hatch in the spring after. Newly hatched fry live in gravel and continues to grow thanks to the energy reserves in the egg yolk and begin feeding. Salmon Atlantic first few years living in small streams and rivers, eating insects domestic and other plankton from the water bringing them into sight. This stage of life they are called "Parr" and most of us are creatures of self-defense alone territory with feeding other fish can invade and battling with them. After reaching a size of around 4 inches (10 cm), this fish became "Smolt" in the spring and begin to move out of the ocean. In southern New England, where the growing season long, only takes about two years let them become a smolt, but farther north, the time will longer: up to three years in Northern Vermont, four years in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland in five years. In moving down stream, or on a more integrated smolt, start up and development of male stamina they need when salinity in the ocean. Once in the ocean, salmon advantage of food sources abundant and growing rapidly. While the move in search of food, they head toward the main living area in the North Atlantic near Greenland and Iceland. Once in the ocean, salmon have to dodge many of prey species such as seals and the larger fish to survive. After experiencing one or two years at sea, salmon begin the journey back. It is thought salmon advantage of sun or magnetic fields to orient to the river shore where they were born, although this is not yet certain. then they use olfactory know smolt stage to find rivers and creeks where they are born. Salmon can in fresh waters in spring, summer or fall, but the reproduction takes place in the fall, and repeat a new life cycle. Atlantic salmon have trouble in New England in many years. There was a very busy time, but the fish become extinct on the Connecticut and Merrimac River in the 1800s for the construction of dams to prevent them from spawning areas. More recently, salmon downstream rivers in Maine has undergone a serious decline in numbers. It is thought that this decrease is partly due to the reduced number of salmon engineers caused by the deteriorating condition of the oceans related to temperature cycle. For whatever reason, salmon in Maine now is classified as endangered. but also with hope for Atlantic salmon. Twenty-five years ago, federal fisheries agencies and states have focused effort to restore Atlantic salmon in southern New England. There are about 200 to 500 salmon have returned to the Connecticut River each year for twenty years, although those involved are hoping to increase the number of individuals. Last year, natural salmon reproduction in Massachusetts first in over 150 years occurred on the Westfield River, a tributary of the Connecticut River. In the coming years, we can hope to see many "king of fish" back the waters of the Connecticut River is recovering.
