CG là một trong 5 huyện ngoại thành của thành phố Hồ Chí Minh, nằm án ngữ ở vùng biển phía Đông Nam thành phố và cách trung tâm thành phố khoảng 50km. Bán đảo CG là phần duyên hải cực Nam, với bờ biển dài 13km từ mũi CG đến mũi Đong Tranh. Diện tích tự nhiên của huyện CG là 71.642 ha. Theo thống kê của huyện năm 1999, dân số CG là 58819 người, gồm 28645 nam và 29912 nữ thuộc 11842 hộ; trong đó 31363 người trong độ tuổi lao động, lao động đang làm việc 24500 người. CG là vùng đất có nhiều tiềm năng phát triển về nuôi trồng và đánh bắt thủy sản, về lâm nghiệp, về nông nghiệp, và đặc biệt là về du lịch sinh thái. CG hội đủ các yếu tố cần cho phát triển du lịch sinh thái như: rừng, biển, thủy hải sản, giao thông thủy, cảnh quan thiên nhiên, truyền thống lịch sử cách mạng, văn hóa lễ hội dân gian. Là huyện duy nhất của thành phố Hồ Chí Minh có rừng ngập mặn gắn với mạng lưới sông rạch quanh co uốn khúc. Hơn nữa, CG còn có khu di tích lịch sử cách mạng rừng Sac, khu du lịch Lăng Ca Ong, bãi biển 30/4, khu nhà vườn cây trái và nuôi trồng thủy hải sản; khu Lam Vien CG với nhiều khả năng thu hút khách du lịch, đặc biệt là du khách nước ngoài. Như vậy, ở CG hai yếu tố rừng và biển là hai yếu tố quan trọng quyết định, thúc đẩy phát triển du lịch sinh thái nói riêng và phát triển kinh tế-xã hội của huyện CG nói chung. Trong những năm gần đây, chính nhờ lợi thế phát triển du lịch mà CG được đầu tư nhiều về cơ sở hạ tầng, trong đó các tuyến đường giao thong được ưu tiên hàng đầu. Hiện nay, tuyến đường rừng Sac là tuyến đường chính, xuyên suốt từ phà Binh Khanh đến mũi CG đã được nâng cấp đạt chất lượng cao.
