Theo dự kiến trong 5 năm tới( 2015-2020), tầm nhìn đến năm 2015 mà Bộ công thương phê duyệt từ giữa năm 2011 thì mục tiêu đặt ra là sau 5 năm ngành nhựa phải tăng gấp đôi về giá trị sản xuất và kim ngạch. Cụ thể là tới năm 2015 phải đạt kim ngạch xuất khẩu là 2,15 tỉ USD, đến năm 2020 là 4,3 tỉ USD.Đồng thời tăng được tỉ trọng nhóm nhựa kỹ thuật và nhựa vật liệu xây dựng trong cơ cấu sản xuất toàn ngành. Do đó ngành nhựa Việt Nam vẫn còn rất nhiều cơ hội để phát triển và có sự phân hóa mạnh. Các công ty có chiến lược hợp lý đúng đắn, nghiên cứu công nghệ, có các đối tác sản xuất uy tín, có thương hiệu và đa dạng về sản phẩm trong các phân khúc có tính cạnh tranh cao sẽ tồn tại.Với đặc thù sản phẩm mang tính chất của nhóm hàng thiết yếu, các doanh nghiệp ngành Nhựa hoàn toàn có khả năng thay đổi giá để duy trì lợi nhuận trước biến động của các chi phí đầu vào.
Theo báo cáo của Hiệp hội Nhựa Việt Nam, trong năm 2013, ngành nhựa xuất khẩu đạt tổng kim ngạch 2,215 tỷ USD và năm 2014 dự báo ngành nhựa xuất khẩu đạt tổng kim ngạch gần 3 tỷ USD ( tăng 35,2% so với năm 2013)
