Để tưởng nhớ công lao của bà và khẳng định quyết tâm tiếp tục sự nghiệp mà Florence đã dày công xây dựng. Hội đồng Điều dưỡng thế giới đã quyết định lấy ngày 12 - 5 hằng năm, ngày sinh của Florence Nightingale, làm ngày điều dưỡng quốc tế. Bà đã trở thành người mẹ tinh thần của ngành Điều dưỡng thế giới.

Hiện nay ngành Điều dưỡng của thế giới đã được xếp là một ngành nghề riêng biệt, ngang hàng với các ngành, nghề khác. Có nhiều trình độ điều dưỡng khác nhau: đại học, trên đại học. Nhiều cán bộ điều dưỡng đã có bằng thạc sĩ, tiến sĩ... và các học hàm phó giáo sư, giáo sư...
