Ở Việt Nam theo như quan điểm của nhiều nhà khoa học trong giới sử học đã nhận định: Việt Nam không có một chế độ chiếm hữu nô lệ điển hình cũng như không trải quan một cuộc cách mạng dân chủ tư sản triệt để. Điều đó khiến cho chúng ta không có điều kiện để thủ tiêu triệt để những tàn dư của các phương thức đã tồn tại trong xã hội tiền tư bản như ở các nước phương Tây.
Do đó mà ở Việt Nam sự chuyển biến từ hình thái kinh tế xã hội này sang hình thái kinh tế xã hội khác cũng không qua những bước nhảy vọt thật sự mang tính cách mạng. Cho nên sự tồn tại của phương thức sản xuất cũ trong lòng các phương thức sản xuất cũ lại càng thêm đậm nét và sâu sắc.
Đến thời điểm hiện nay, khi chúng ta ở vào thời kì đầu xuất phát đi lên chủ nghĩa xã hội mà trong lòng xã hội nước ta, vẫn còn tồn tại đan xen rất nhiều phương thức sản xuất khác nhau từ công xã nguyên thủy đến thuộc địa nửa phong kiến.
Do ảnh hưởng của lịch sử để lại, đặc biệt là yêu cầu chống ngoại xâm và công cuộc trị thủy – đó là yếu tố có kết cộng đồng hình thành nên cộng đồng làng xã cùng với truyền thống văn hóa dân tộc là một yếu tố vô cùng bền vững để duy trì cái cũ, cái được xem là truyền thống.
