Chúng ta có thể đã quan tâm nhiều đến tầm quan trọng của sức khoẻ nhưng “Sức khoẻ là gì” thì dường như có nhiều kiểu định nghĩa khác nhau tuỳ theo trình độ hiểu biết của mỗi người. Đến nay, Tổ Chức Y Tế Thế Giới (WHO ) đã đưa ra định nghĩa chuẩn về sức khoẻ như sau :
Điều đó có nghĩa sức khoẻ được cho là bao gồm tình trạng của cả tinh thần lẫn thể chất. Chúng ta có thể bổ sung cho đầy đủ hơn định nghĩa về sức khoẻ như sau : “ Sức khoẻ của một người là kết quả tổng hoà của tất cả các yếu tố tạo nên tinh thần và thể chất của con người ấy”
