Ngày 2 tháng 7 năm 1976, Quốc hội đầu tiên của nước Việt Nam thống nhất đổi tên nước thành Cộng hoà Xã hội Chủ nghĩa Việt Nam đồng thời đặt lại tên cho thành phố theo tên của chủ tịch đầu tiên của nước, Hồ Chí Minh. Cho đến nay, tên cũ Sài Gòn vẫn được sử dụng rất phổ biến, đặc biệt trong các ngữ cảnh không chính thức. Đối với người dân có gốc ở Sài Gòn lâu đời, và đặc biệt là cộng đồng người Việt hải ngoại, cái tên Sài Gòn vẫn là cái tên mà họ yêu chuộng và dùng hàng ngày. Để kỷ niệm cái tên Sài Gòn và nhắc nhủ cộng đồng người Việt về quê hương của họ, nhiều nơi có người Việt hải ngoại sinh sống, đường phố, cơ sở kinh doanh, và khu chợ được đặt tên là khu Sài-gòn-bé (Saigon, Little-Saigon, New Saigon).

On July 2, 1976, the National Assembly of the unified Vietnam first renamed the Socialist Republic of Vietnam at the same time renamed for the city under the name of the first President of the country, Ho Chi Minh. Until now, the old name Saigon is still used very common, especially in informal contexts. For people have roots in Saigon, and especially the Vietnamese community overseas, the name Saigon is still the name they prefer and use daily. To commemorate the name Saigon and prompt advising Vietnamese community about their homeland, many places have the Vietnamese living overseas, streets, businesses, and the marketplace was named President-GON-baby (Saigon, Little-Saigon, New Saigon).

For people with long-standing roots in Saigon, and especially the overseas Vietnamese community, the name Saigon is still the name they loved and used daily. To commemorate the name Saigon and reminded the Vietnamese community thought about their homeland, many of which have overseas Vietnamese living, street, business establishments, markets and parks are named Sai-Gon- baby (Saigon, Little-Saigon, New Saigon).
