July 2, 1976, the country's first National Assembly of Vietnam agreed to rename the country the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and renamed the city after the name of the country's first president, Ho Chi Minh . So far, the former name Saigon is still used very popular, especially in the informal context. For people with long-standing roots in Saigon, and especially the overseas Vietnamese community, the name Saigon is still the name they loved and used daily. To commemorate the name Saigon and reminded the Vietnamese community thought about their homeland, many of which have overseas Vietnamese living, street, business establishments, markets and parks are named Sai-Gon- baby (Saigon, Little-Saigon, New Saigon).
