Mấy năm qua hoạt động xuất nhập khẩu của thành phố Hà Nội được coi là hết sức quan trọng của nền kinh tế đối ngoại.Nhiều doanh nghiệp đã tìm được hướng đi sau khi một số thị trường truyền thống đổ vỡ.
Hà Nội hiện có 50 đơn vị được phép xuất nhập khẩu trực tiếp. Tổng kim ngạch xuất khẩu năm 2010 đạt 500 triệu USD và Rúp (trong đó 96,6% là USD) chiếm 14% tỷ trọng kim ngạch xuất khẩu của cả nước. Kim ngạch xuất khẩu của các cơ sở do thành phố Hà Nội quản lý đạt 110 triệu USD và Rup. Tổng kim ngạch nhập khẩu của các đơn vị do thành phố quản lý là 105 triệu USD.
Về cơ cấu xuất khẩu thì hàng công ngiệp chiếm 60%.Về du lịch và dịch vụ, hiện nay trên địa bàn Hà Nội có 51 cơ sở quốc doanh và 115 cơ sở ngoài quốc doanh, tham gia kinh doanh du lịch và dịch vụ. Năm 2013, Hà Nội đón 300 ngàn lượt khách quốc tế, đạt doanh thu là 400 tỷ đồng.
Trong giai đoạn 2010-2015 Hà Nội sẽ hướng đầu tư phát triển sản xuất. Đến năm 2015 Hà Nội sẽ phấn đấu xây dựng cho được khu chế xuất Sóc Sơn và hình thành 3 cụm công nghiệp Sài Đông, Đông Anh và Nam Thăng Long. Đồng thời cũng trong giai đoạn 2014-2015 thành phố Hà Nội cũng tăng cường kêu gọi đầu tư và chế biến nông sản thực phẩm.
