Vốn lưu động là biểu hiện bằng tiền của tài sản lưu động nên vốn lưu động luôn chịu sự chi phối bởi những đặc điểm của tài sản lưu động. Trong các doanh nghiệp người ta thường chia tài sản lưu động (TSLĐ) thành hai loại: TSLĐ sản xuất và TSLĐ lưu thông.
- TSLĐ sản xuất bao gồm các loại nguyên, nhiên, vật liệu, phụ tùng thay thế, bán thành phẩm, sản phẩm dở dang…đang trong quá trình sản xuất chế biến.
- TSLĐ lưu thông bao gồm các sản phẩm thành phẩm chờ tiêu thụ, các loại vốn bằng tiền, các khoản vốn trong thanh toán, các khoản chi phí chờ kết chuyển, chi phí trả trước…Trong quá trình sản xuất kinh doanh, các TSLĐ sản xuất và TSLĐ lưu thông luôn vận động, thay thế và chuyển hóa lẫn nhau, đảm bảo cho quá trình sản xuất kinh doanh được tiến hành liên tục, thuận lợi.
Qua một chu kỳ sản xuất kinh doanh, VLĐ chuyển hóa thành nhiều hình thái khác nhau. Đầu tiên khi tham gia vào quá trình sản xuất VLĐ thể hiện dưới dạng sơ khai của mình là tiền tệ, qua các giai đoạn nó dần chuyển thành các sản phẩm dở dang hay bán thành phẩm. Giai đoạn cuối cùng của quá trình sản xuất kinh doanh VLĐ được chuyển hóa vào sản phẩm cuối cùng. Khi sản phẩm này được bán trên thị trường sẽ thu về tiền tệ hay hình thái ban đầu của VLĐ.
