Hằng năm nước ta phải nhập khẩu 40% tương đương với 250 nghìn tấn điều thô để chế biến. Trong khi đó thì tiềm năng canh tác điều của nước ta không hề thiếu, nhưng ở một số nơi người dân vẫn chặt phá cây điều đi.
Do biến động về giá cuối năm 2010 đầu 2011 gây bất lợi cho ngành điều nước ta. Cũng như có nhiều thương hiệu cạnh tranh với đa dạng dòng sản phẩm, ví dụ như Ấn Độ có rất nhiều bánh kẹo chế biến từ hạt điều, chocolate, mè hạt điều,… Thuế nhập khẩu hạt điều thô của Việt Nam còn cao rất nhiều so với các nước khác, mặc dù đã có những ưu đãi về thuế xuất nhập khẩu nhưng không phải doanh nghiệp nào cũng làm được đúng theo quy định của Hải quan. Đây cũng là nguyên nhân làm giảm lợi thế cạnh tranh của Việt Nam co với các nước khác.
