Vận đơn có nhiều loại do nhiều hãng tàu phát hành nên nội dung vận đơn cũng khác nhau. Vận đơn được in thành mẫu, thường gồm 2 mặt, có nội dung chủ yếu như sau (trừ vận đơn điện tử):
Mặt thứ nhất thường gồm những nội dung:
- Số vận đơn (number of bill of lading)
- Người gửi hàng (shipper)
- Người nhận hàng (consignee)
- Địa chỉ thông báo (notify address)
- Chủ tàu (shipowner)
- Cờ tàu (flag)
- Tên tàu (vessel hay name of ship)
- Cảng xếp hàng (port of loading)
- Cảng chuyển tải (via or transhipment port)
- Nơi giao hàng (place of delivery)
- Tên hàng (name of goods)
- Kỹ mã hiệu (marks and numbers)
- Cách đóng gói và mô tả hàng hoá (kind of packages and discriptions of goods)
- Số kiện (number of packages)
- Trọng lượng toàn bộ hay thể tích (total weight or mesurement)
- Cước phí và chi chí (freight and charges)
- Số bản vận đơn gốc (number of original bill of lading)
- Thời gian và địa điểm cấp vận đơn (place and date of issue)
- Chữ ký của người vận tải (thườnglà master’s signature)
Nội dung cuả mặt trước vận đơn do người xếp hàng điền vào trên cơ sở số liệu trên biên lai thuyền phó.
