Nguồn cấp điện cho tỉnh chủ yếu từ trạm Bạc Liêu II220/110KV - 2xl25MVA. Theo quy hoạch điện VII giai đoạn 2016 - 2020 sẽ xây dựng trạm Giá Rai II 220/110KV - 125MVA trên địa bàn huyện Giá Rai.
Ngoài ra còn được bổ sung thêm một dạng nguồn năng lượng mói đó lả năng lượng gió. Tuy nhiên, do gió là nguồn năng lượng phụ thuộc vào tự nhiên, không điều tiết được, do đó khi tính toán cân bằng công suất nguồn và lưới điện của tỉnh không đưa công suất điện gió vào làm nguồn để cân bằng công suất.
Hiện nay trạm Bạc Liêu II - 125MVA đã xây dựng hoàn thành và đưa vào vận hành cuối năm 2012 và sẽ được nâng công suất lên 2xl25MVA vào năm 2013. Đồng thời trạm Cà Mau II cách Trạm Bạc Liêu II trên 60km cũng được nâng công suất lên 2x250MVA. Xét về nhu cầu điện của tỉnh Bạc Liêu đến năm 2020 thì nguồn cấp điện cho tỉnh Bạc Liêu gồm trạm Bạc Liêu II, trạm Cà Mau II và Nhà máy điện gió sẽ đủ cung cấp điện cho tỉnh. Vì vậy đề xuất phương án xây dựng trạm Giá Rai 220/110KV vào giai đoạn sau 2020.
+ Điện gió
Căn cứ vào tiềm năng gió khu vực tỉnh Bạc Liêu và theo Quyết định số 4934/QĐ-BCT ngày 28/9/2011 của Bộ Công thương “về việc phê duyệt bổ sung QH phát triển điện lực tỉnh Bạc Liêu giai đoạn 2006-2010 có xét đến năm 2015”. Trong giai đoạn 2011- 2015 Nhà máy điện gió (NMĐG) Bạc Liêu xây dựng tại xã Vĩnh Trạch Đông - Tp Bạc Liêu sẽ cung cấp cho hệ thống nguồn công suất 99MW; đã hoàn thành giai đoạn một 16 MW (gồm 10 tua bin, 1,6 MW/tua bin), đóng điện hòa lưới quốc gia vào tháng 5 năm 2013.
Theo Nghị quyết số 52NQ-HĐND ngày 20/3/2012 của Thường trực HĐND tỉnh Bạc Liêu, giai đoạn 2015 - 2020 sẽ lần lượt mở rộng nâng công suất các NMĐG với tổng công suất là 480MW.
