Trong vài năm gần đây, nghề nuôi cá lồng của địa phương đã có sự thay đổi đáng kể. Năm 2014, toàn tỉnh có 140 lồng nuôi cá trên sông, hồ chứa với thể tích 5.100m3, sản lượng đạt 75 tấn (tăng gấp 6 lần so với năm 2011). Tuy nhiên, nghề nuôi cá lồng trên sông, hồ chứa mới chỉ tập trung ở một số địa phương, chưa tận dụng và phát huy hết tiềm năng của tỉnh. Số lượng lồng bè và sản lượng nuôi tăng dần qua các năm nhưng sản phẩm nuôi chủ yếu phục vụ nhu cầu địa phương, chưa tạo thành sản phẩm hàng hóa lớn cung cấp cho thị trường toàn tỉnh. Phần lớn các hộ nuôi cá lồng mang tính tự phát, vẫn còn thiếu kỹ thuật, chưa chủ động được nguồn giống, yếu trong khâu phòng trị bệnh cho cá... Chính vì vậy hiệu quả chưa cao, thiếu bền vững, từ đó gây ra rủi ro về kinh tế cho người nuôi.
