Tăng huyết áp (THA) là một bệnh mạn tính phổ biến nhất hiện nay trong cộng đồng. Hiện nay, cứ trung bình 10 người lớn có 4 người bị THA [6]. Năm 2000, theo ước tính của Tổ chức Y tế Thế giới (WHO), toàn thế giới có tới 972 triệu người bị THA và con số này được ước tính là vào khoảng 15,6 tỷ người vào năm 2025 [11]. Theo số liệu thống kê mới nhất của WHO năm 2014, tăng huyết áp ở người lớn từ 18 tuổi trở lên là khoảng 22% [40]. Điều này cho thấy tỷ lệ người mắc THA ngày càng tăng với tốc độ đáng lo ngại, đặc biệt tuổi mắc mới ngày càng trẻ hóa.
