Theo nghiên cứu của Bộ Y tế, tỷ lệ suy dinh dưỡng của trẻ dưới 5 tuổi có thể giảm từ 1-10%, nếu cha mẹ thường xuyên rửa tay cho trẻ với xà phòng.
Tại buổi phát động chiến dịch truyền thông Hành trình 10 triệu bàn tay sạch hôm 15/5 tại Hà Nội, Bộ trưởng Y tế Nguyễn Thị Kim Tiến cho hay, mỗi bàn tay không sạch có thể chứa hàng triệu vi khuẩn, và rất nhiều tác nhân gây bệnh, tiêu biểu là các bệnh tay chân miệng - bệnh đang vào giai đoạn cao điểm. Bệnh chưa có vắc xin, và không có thuốc điều trị đặc hiệu.
Theo bà Tiến, đối với bệnh tay chân miệng hoặc các bệnh hay lây nhiễm như cúm, viêm đường hô hấp, đau mắt đỏ, tiêu chảy và nhiều bệnh truyền nhiễm khác, việc rửa tay thường xuyên với xà phòng được xem là một biện pháp vệ sinh phòng bệnh hiệu quả, đơn giản và rẻ tiền hơn bất cứ loại vắc xin nào. Chính vì vậy, Liên Hợp Quốc đã chọn ngày 15/10 hàng năm là Ngày Thế giới rửa tay với xà phòng.
Theo nghiên cứu của Bộ Y tế, tỷ lệ suy dinh dưỡng của trẻ dưới 5 tuổi có thể giảm từ 1-10%, nếu cha mẹ thường xuyên rửa tay cho trẻ với xà phòng. Tuy nhiên, trên thực tế, tỷ lệ người dân rửa tay thường xuyên với xà phòng còn thấp, kể cả các cơ sở y tế. Theo thống kê tại Việt Nam, chỉ 23% người dân có thói quen rửa tay bằng xà phòng và nước sạch trước khi ăn, 36% rửa tay bằng xà phòng sau khi đi vệ sinh.
Bộ Y tế kêu gọi tất cả các ngành, tổ chức, các cấp chính quyền, cơ quan đoàn thể, trường học và cơ quan thông tấn báo chí tham gia tích cực vào các hoạt động của chiến dịch Hành trình 10 triệu bàn tay sạch; tập trung đẩy mạnh hoạt động tuyên truyền dưới nhiều hình thức nhằm vận động nhân dân hình thành thói quen rửa tay với xà phòng để phòng chống dịch bệnh, đảm bảo vệ sinh trong chế biến thực phẩm, ăn uống sạch, ở sạch...
Thời gian phát động chiến dịch bắt đầu từ tháng 5, và duy trì các hoạt động đến hết tháng 10.
Hưởng ứng chiến dịch này, Thứ trưởng Bộ Giáo dục và Đào tạo Nguyễn Thị Nghĩa cho biết, Bộ sẽ tăng cường phối hợp, tập trung tuyên truyền tại các trường học, đưa các hoạt động truyền thông rửa tay với xà phòng vào các hoạt động ngoại khóa, hoạt động đoàn, đội...; tổ chức các đợt ra quân tổng vệ sinh trường học, công sở nhằm giáo dục, nâng cao ý thức, trách nhiệm của học sinh, giáo viên trong phòng chống dịch bệnh.
