CISG được soạn thảo bởi Ủy ban của Liên Hợp Quốc về Luật thương mại quốc tế (UNCITRAL) trong một nỗ lực hướng tới việc thống nhất nguồn luật áp dụng cho hợp đồng mua bán hàng hóa quốc tế. Công ước này được thông qua tại Viên (Áo) ngày 11 tháng 04 năm 1980 (nên còn được gọi là Công ước Viên 1980) và có hiệu lực từ ngày 01/01/1988.

CISG was drafted by the United Nations Commission on international trade law (UNCITRAL) in an effort to unify the sources of law applicable to the contract for the international sale of goods. This Convention was adopted in Vienna (Austria) on 11 April 1980 (so called Convention Member 1980) and take effect from 01/01/1988.
