Mặc dù Việt Nam được xếp là nước có thu nhập trung bình trên thế giới, nhưng tình hình khoảng cách thu nhập và mức sống giữa người giàu và người nghèo, giữa đô thị và nông thôn ngày càng gia tăng. Việt Nam thực sự đã tiến rất xa trong vài chục năm qua. Sự giàu có này theo nhiều chuyên gia cho biết là nhờ tận dụng tài nguyên như đất, khoáng sản và nhân công giá rẻ. Đặc biệt khoảng cách giàu nghèo đã và đang giãn ra từ 7 đến 8 % trong thập niên qua và các khoảng cách này không nằm trong khoảng cách an toàn của phát triển bền vững
