Học sinh Hàn Quốc nổi tiếng là có kết quả học tập cao hàng đầu thế giới. Thi đại học là kỳ thi có ý nghĩa sống còn đối với các em. Thế nên để chuẩn bị cho kỳ thi quan trọng này, học sinh xứ sở kim chi phải trải qua một quãng thời gian học tập vất vả, dậy sớm thức khuya ngay từ khi bước chân vào cấp hai.

Trung bình một ngày, học sinh Hàn Quốc bắt đầu học tập từ 8 giờ sáng cho tới 10 giờ đêm. Để phục vụ nhu cầu “đèn sách miệt mài” này, hàng loạt các lớp học thêm mọc lên như nấm khắp đất nước.

Thông thường một buổi học trên lớp sẽ kết thúc vào lúc 4 giờ chiều, cộng thêm 1 tiếng sinh hoạt câu lạc bộ và tới 5 giờ chiều, các học sinh sẽ chính thức rời khỏi trường. Tiếp đó các em lũ lượt kéo nhau đi học thêm, mỗi buổi học kéo dài từ 6 giờ tối đến 10 giờ đêm. Chưa hết, các em còn phải mất thêm từ 1 đến 2 tiếng đồng hồ tự học rồi mới về nhà. Vì vậy, việc nhiều học sinh Hàn Quốc trở về nhà lúc 11 giờ đêm là " chuyện thường ngày "

Ở Hàn Quốc, tất cả các trường học đều học vào thứ 7 nên các em học sinh không được nghỉ ngơi dịp cuối tuần. May mắn là từ năm 2010, chính phủ Hàn Quốc đã ra quyết định cho những trường công chỉ phải học hai ngày thứ 7 trong tháng.
Cũng chính vì áp lực phải thi đỗ bằng được vào đại học quá lớn nên Hàn Quốc đã trở thành quốc gia có tỷ lệ tự tử học đường cao nhất trong số các nước thuộc Tổ chức Hợp tác và Phát triển Kinh tế (OECD).
