Chức năng tạo tiền là chức năng cực kỳ quan trọng của Ngân hàng thương mại. Chức năng này được thể hiện trong quá trình Ngân hàng thương mại cấp tín dụng cho nền kinh tế và hoạt động đầu tư của Ngân hàng thương mại, trong mối quan hệ với Ngân hàng trung ương đặc biệt trong quá trình thực hiện chính sách tiền tệ mà mục tiêu của chính sách tiền tệ là ổn định giá trị đồng tiền. Từ một lượng tiền cơ sở do Ngân hàng trung ương phát hành qua hệ thống Ngân hàng thương mại sẽ được tăng lên gấp bội khi Ngân hàng thương mại cấp tín dụng cho nền kinh tế.
