Thực trạng về quản lý và xử lý trong chăn nuôi.
Hiện nay ở nước ta, phương thức chăn nuôi nông hộ vẫn chiếm tỷ lệ lớn. Vì vậy, việc xử lý và quản lý chất thải vật nuôi ở nước ta gặp nhiều khó khăn. Những năm qua, chất thải vật nuôi trong nông hộ được xử lý bằng 3 biện pháp chủ yếu sau đây:
- Chất thải vật nuôi thải trực tiếp ra kênh mương và trực tiếp xuống ao, hồ;
- Chất thải được ủ làm phân bón cho cây trồng;
- Chất thải chăn nuôi được xử lý bằng công nghệ khí sinh học (biogas).
Bên cạnh đó còn có một số phương pháp khác, nhưng chưa được nhân rộng như xử lý chất thải bằng sinh vật thủy sinh (cây muỗi nước, bèo lục bình..), xử lý bằng hồ sinh học.
Theo kết quả thống kê năm 2010, cả nước có khoảng 8.500.000 hộ có chuồng trại chăn nuôi quy mô hộ gia đình; khoảng 18.000 trang trại chăn nuôi tập trung. Các trang trại chăn nuôi tập trung quy mô lớn phần lớn có hệ thống xử lý chất thải với các loại công nghệ khác nhau, nhưng hiệu quả xử lý chưa triệt để. Chăn nuôi hộ gia đình mới có khoảng 70% tương ứng với khoảng 5.950.000 hộ có chuồng trại chăn nuôi, trong đó mới có khoảng 8,7% hộ chăn nuôi có công trình khí sinh học (hầm Biogas). Tỷ lệ hộ gia đình có chuồng trại chăn nuôi hợp vệ sinh cũng chỉ chiếm khoảng 10%. Còn khoảng 23% số hộ chăn nuôi không xử lý chất thải vật nuôi và chỉ có 0,6% số hộ có cam kết bảo vệ môi trường. Số trang trại chăn nuôi có hệ thống xử lý chất thải bằng biogas khoảng 67%. Trong đó chỉ có khoảng 2,8% có đánh giá tác động môi trường
