Du lịch toàn cầu giảm mạnh năm 2008 do khủng hoảng tài chính với mức tăng 2,1%, bằng một phần ba năm trước đó. Năm 2009, mức tăng này là 3,8%, thấp nhất trong 60 năm do ảnh hưởng của dịch cúm lợn, kèm theo việc thắt chặt chi tiêu. Sau đó, du lịch quốc tế đã hồi phục mạnh, lên 6,6% năm 2010 và 5% năm 2011 kể cả khi cuộc khủng hoảng chưa chấm dứt. Từ sau khủng hoảng năm 2010, năm 2015 được ghi nhận là năm thứ 6 liên tiếp lượng khách du lịch quốc tế đạt mức tăng trưởng hàng năm trên trung bình, đạt 4% hoặc hơn.
