Bạo lực gia đình là hành vi cố ý của các thành viên gia đình gây tổn hại hoặc có khả năng gây tổn hại về thể chất, tinh thần, kinh tế đối với các thành viên khác trong gia đình. Bạo lực gia đình diễn ra dưới nhiều hình thức cưỡng bức khác nhau như: đánh đập, hành hạ, gây thương tích cho nạn nhân, cưỡng hiếp, khủng bố tinh thần, cô lập nạn nhân trước các mối quan hệ gia đình cũng như xã hội, bao vây kinh tế, kiểm soát tiền bạc… Những hành vi bạo lực gia đình đó gây ra những tác động tiêu cực về mặt xã hội, dẫn đến sự bất ổn trong quá trình phát triển của gia đình và xã hội.

Bạo lực gia đình là vấn nạn của xã hội và đang gây ra nhiều hậu quả nghiêm trọng nhất là đối với phụ nữ, trẻ em.
