Người Nhật rất đúng giờ – đó là nhận định mà hầu hết người nước ngoài đưa ra khi tiếp xúc với người Nhật, với văn hoá Nhật. Điều này có thể dễ dàng nhận thấy khi đối chiếu lịch trình giờ tàu chạy với điểm thời gian thực tế mà tàu đến ga, hoặc khi sắp xếp một cuộc hẹn với người Nhật và luôn thấy họ đến trước giờ hẹn ít nhất 5 phút. Thói quen đó ăn sâu vào mỗi cá nhân và dần trở thành một quy tắc ngầm, một ý thức cơ bản. Người Nhật luôn tránh làm phiền người khác. Do vậy tới trễ hẹn được coi là hành vi thiếu lịch sự, làm tổn hại tới người khác. Việc đúng giờ là điều nên làm trong mọi tình huống. Vì thế mà ta có thể dễ dàng bắt gặp cảnh tượng nhân viên công ty chạy vội cho kịp giờ làm, cảnh bước chân vội vã trên khắp các đường phố.

Trong khi đó, ý thức tuân thủ nguyên tắc về thời gian ở Việt Nam dường như chưa được đề cao đúng mức. Việc trễ hẹn năm bảy phút là chuyện thường tình. Và cũng chẳng mấy ai phàn nàn về điều đó bởi nó đã ăn sâu vào nếp sống. Và sự cố gắng để thay đổi một hành vi mà cả xã hội chấp nhận dường như không mấy được lưu tâm.
