Rác thải chất dẻo trên đại dương đang gây tổn thất cho nền kinh tế thế giới ít nhất 13 tỷ USD mỗi năm, đe dọa đời sống sinh vật biển, ngành du lịch và nghề cá.


Người đứng đầu UNEP cho biết, chất dẻo không thể thiếu trong cuộc sống hiện đại, tuy nhiên hoạt động sử dụng vật liệu này của con người đang gây ra những tác động nghiêm trọng lên môi trường sinh thái.

Báo cáo của UNEP cho biết rác thải chất dẻo (gồm chai nhựa, túi nilon, hộp đựng đồ ăn...) là nguyên nhân gây tử vong cho nhiều loài sinh vật biển khi bị nuốt phải như rùa, cá heo và cá voi hoặc tác động tiêu cực tới môi trường sống như các rặng san hô.
