Năm 2007, quỹ quốc tế bảo vệ thiên nhiên tại Úc lần đầu tiên tổ chức chiến dịch giờ trái đất ở sydney. Từ năm 2008 chiến dịch được mở rộng ra toàn cầu với 35 quốc gia và 370 thành phố tham gia. Từ đó quốc tế quy định vào ngày thứ bảy cuối cùng của tháng ba sẽ giành trọn một giờ để tắt các thiết bị điện. Mục đích của chiến dịch này nhằm nâng cao ý thức của người dân về tầm quan trọng của môi trường
