Kể từ khi đất nước được tái thống nhất, Đảng và chính phủ Việt Nam đã có những nỗ lực to lớn để cải cách hệ thống giáo dục trong cả nước. Vào năm học 1980-1981, lần đầu tiên Việt Nam áp dụng chương trình 12 năm và đến năm 1992 toàn bộ chương trình và sách giáo khoa mới đã được hoàn thành.
Hệ thống giáo dục quốc dân của Việt Nam hiện nay bao gồm: giáo dục mầm non có nhà trẻ và mẫu giáo; giáo dục phổ thông có hai bậc học là bậc tiểu học (từ lớp 1 đến lớp 5) và bậc trung học (từ lớp 6 đến lớp 12), bậc trung học có hai cấp học là cấp trung học cơ sở và cấp trung học phổ thông; giáo dục nghề nghiệp có trung học chuyên nghiệp và dạy nghề; giáo dục đại học.

Chiến dịch xóa mù chữ đã thu được những thành tựu đáng khích lệ. Việt Nam là một trong những nước có tỷ lệ mù chữ thấp nhất trên thế giới. Các loại hình đào tạo đã được đa dạng hóa với các hệ đào tạo chính quy, tại chức và từ xa để đáp ứng nhu cầu ngày càng cao của người học cũng như của toàn xã hội. Hơn nữa ngày càng có nhiều sinh viên Việt Nam được gửi ra nước ngoài để học tập và học tập chuyên sâu.
