Thừa Thiên Huế có tổng diện tích tự nhiên là 503.320,53ha, trong đó diện tích đất khoảng 465.205 ha; hồ, ao, đầm, sông suối, núi đá là 37.125,53 ha. Đất đồi núi chiếm trên 3/4 tổng diện tích tự nhiên, còn đất đồng bằng duyên hải chỉ dưới 1/5 tổng diện tích tự nhiên của tỉnh.
Về phân loại, chủ yếu ở Thừa Thiên Huế có các nhóm và loại đất sau:
1. Nhóm cồn cát và đất cát biển (Arenosols)
2. Nhóm đất mặn (Salic Fluvisols)
3. Nhóm đất phèn (Thionic Fluvisols)
4. Nhóm đất phù sa (Fluvisols)
5. Đất lầy và than bùn (Gieysols and Histosols)
6. Nhóm đất xám bạc màu (Acrisols)
7. Nhóm đất đỏ vàng (Acrisols)
8. Nhóm đất thung lũng dốc tụ ( Dystric Gleysols )
9.Nhóm đất mùn vàng đỏ trên núi (Humic Acrisols)
10. Đất xói mòn trơ sỏi đá ( Leptosols)
Là tỉnh có diện tích đất nhỏ (505.399 ha) nhưng đất đai đa dạng, được hình thành từ 10 nhóm đất khác nhau. Nhóm đất đỏ vàng có diện tích lớn nhất với 347.431ha, chiếm 68,7% tổng diện tích tự nhiên. Diện tích đất bằng bao gồm cả đất thung lũng do sản phẩm dốc tụ chỉ có 98.882 ha, chiếm 19,5% diện tích tự nhiên của tỉnh. Trong đó diện tích đất cần cải tạo bao gồm: đất cồn cát, bãi cát và đất cát biển; nhóm đất phèn ít và trung bình, mặn nhiều; nhóm đất mặn; nhóm đất phù sa úng nước, đất lầy và đất thung lũng do sản phẩm dốc tụ có đến 59.440 ha, chiếm 60% diện tích đất bằng. Diện tích đất phân bố ở địa hình dốc có 369.393 ha (kể cả đất sói mòn trơ sỏi đá).
