Tuy nhiên, ông Shirreff đưa ra nhận định rằng, nếu Moscow sử dụng sức mạnh quân sự thông thường để chống lại bất cứ thành viên nào của NATO, khối này sẽ tuyên chiến với Nga theo Điều 5 của Hiệp ước, do đó, Nga sẽ dùng kho vũ khí hạt nhân để đáp trả NATO.
