Thực tiễn hoạt động của các tnc trên thế giới đã cho thấy 90% số công ty có nguồn gốc từ một nước.Do đó căn cứ vào dánh sách tên các quốc gia lãnh thổ có vốn đầu tư trực tiếp nước ngoài vào việt nam chúng ta có thể nhận diện một cách đầy đủ nguồn gốc của các tnc.Từ năm 88-97 phần đầu tư của các tnc đông á chiếm tới 64,8% trong số 10 nước đầu tư lớn nhất vào việt nam.Năm 98 kinh tế đông á lâm vào khủng hoảng tài chính tiền tệ thì mức này vẫn chiếm tới 44,9% và năm 1999 sau sự phục hồi của các nền kinh tế đông á mức này đã tăng trở lại với mức 60,4%.trong số các công ty nước ngoài đầu tư vào việt nam thì các nhà đầu tư thuộc asean chiếm 24,56%.như vậy vốn đầu tư trực tiếp của nước ngoài vào việt nam có nguồn gốc chủ yếu là các nền kinh tế châu á.
