Cổ Loa thành
Cổ Loa được biết đến không chỉ là cái tên một thành trì quân sự nổi tiếng của nước Âu Lạc thời An Dương Vương mà còn là trụ sở của huyện Phong Khê thời thuộc Hán, là căn cứ quân sự thời Hậu Lý Nam Đế vào năm 692. Đó cũng là kinh đô đầu tiên của Nhà nước phong kiến Việt Nam độc lập do Ngô Vương Quyền khởi lập và tồn tại từ năm 939 đến năm 944... Cổ Loa thành là một minh chứng cho tài năng sáng tạo và tinh thần bám trụ của người Việt.
Khu di tích Cổ Loa nằm trên địa phận 3 xã Cổ Loa, Dục Tú và Việt Hùng thuộc huyện Đông Anh (Hà Nội), cách trung tâm Thủ đô Hà Nội khoảng 17km về phía Bắc. Theo các tài liệu khảo cổ học thì xa xưa nơi đây là rừng rậm, do biến đổi của thiên nhiên nên tất cả đã chìm vào lòng đất, hiện chỉ còn dấu tích những dải than bùn lớn, những cây cổ thụ... kéo dài qua nhiều địa phương từ Đài Bi qua Cầu Cả, Đại Đà, Hội Phụ đến Lỗi Khê...
Hơn hai nghìn năm trước, An Dương Vương Thục Phán đã tiến về xuôi để lập kinh đô mới cho nước Âu Lạc tại Cổ Loa. Thứ hai là di tích khảo cổ học qua các thời đại Đồ đồng, Đồ sắt thời đại phong kiến. Thứ ba là di tích kiến trúc nghệ thuật với đình, đền, am, miếu...
Cũng giống như nhiều điểm di tích khác, ở Cổ Loa còn có sự đan xen của làng xóm, đồng ruộng, khu dân cư, khu hành chính... Khu dân cư ở Cổ Loa gồm trại, xóm, làng, ruộng, ao chuôm, ngòi lạch. Khu hành chính có bệnh viện, trụ sở cơ quan hành chính phục vụ, trường học, cửa hàng... Nơi đây có chợ Sa nổi tiếng cả vùng và đã đi vào sử sách về dấu ấn văn minh thương nghiệp từ rất sớm. Đặc biệt, ngay từ thời An Dương Vương, Cổ Loa đã có hệ thống giao thông khá hoàn chỉnh với đường bộ và đường thủy, tạo điều kiện thuận lợi cho đời sống và sản xuất của nhân dân.
Theo truyền thuyết dân gian, Cổ Loa thành nguyên thủy của Thục Phán gồm có chín lớp tường thành, bên ngoài là hào sâu bao bọc nhưng hiện nay chỉ còn lại ba vòng thành đắp bằng đất theo hình xoáy trôn ốc, gần như lồng vào nhau ở thế cao dần lên; chúng không hoàn toàn đồng tâm mà hơi lệch về phía Nam. Đây cũng là chiến thuật độc đáo mà sau này, cả trong thời hiện đại, quân và dân ta đã vận dụng sáng tạo đồng thời phát triển thêm lên trong các cuộc chiến đấu chống giặc ngoại xâm. Đây cũng là ví dụ điển hình về việc kết hợp hai thứ quân: quân thủy và quân bộ hiệp đồng chiến đấu trên một địa bàn.
Cổ Loa thành còn là một công trình kiến trúc nghệ thuật và xây dựng đặc sắc mặc dù được xây dựng với mục đích quân sự.
