Đại học Osaka là trường đại học lâu đời thứ sáu ở Nhật Bản, Đại học Osaka xếp hạng 75 trong danh sách những đại học chất lượng nhất thế giới năm 2010 theo ARWU.

Tiền thân của Đại học Osaka là trường cao đẳng Y tế Osaka, và trước đây từng là một trong những Đại học Hoàng gia của Nhật Bản. Trường có 11 khoa và 15 đại học thành viên, được đánh giá là một trong những trung tâm đào tạo khoa học cơ bản, công nghệ và y tế hàng đầu ở châu Á. Hideki Yukawa giành được giải Nobel Vật lí 1949 nhờ những công trình được thực hiện trong thời kì làm việc tại Đại học Osaka.
