Năm Du lịch quốc gia Duyên hải Bắc Trung Bộ - Huế 2012 được tổ chức xuyên suốt trong năm 2012, trong đó tập trung cao điểm vào các tháng 1, 2, 4 (lễ hội đầu Xuân, sự kiện Festival Huế 2012); tháng 6, 7 (mùa du lịch Hè) và những tháng cuối năm (kết thúc Năm Du lịch quốc gia) nhằm kết nối tuyến các kinh đô cổ Việt Nam, kết nối các điểm đến trong nước và khu vực có lượng khách quốc tế lớn. Sự kiện còn là cơ hội thúc đẩy mạnh mẽ liên kết du lịch giữa các địa phương, qua đó thúc đẩy tiềm năng và thu hút các nguồn đầu tư để phát triển du lịch.
