Theo Cục Xúc tiến thương mại tình trạng máy móc thiết bị của ngành dệt may rất lạc hậu, đặc biệt là ngành dệt. Khoảng một nửa số máy móc thiết bị đã được sử dụng ít nhất là 25 năm. Hậu quả là nhiều doanh nghiệp chỉ hoạt động dưới 50% công suất. Bên cạnh đó, các doanh nghiệp may mặc của Việt Nam hiện nay vẫn đang ở trình độ thấp nên đa phần chỉ sản xuất theo phương thức gia công đơn giản. Ngành may mặc Việt Nam đang rất yếu ở mảng thiết kế sản phẩm vì thiếu các nhà thiết kế giỏi, khó tiếp cận và thiếu thông tin về nhu cầu khách hàng. "Doanh nghiệp chúng ta thường bấy lâu nay làm gia công là chính, do đó, hai bộ phận chúng ta thiếu là nghiên cứu về nhu cầu thị trường và khâu thiết kế, chúng ta làm gia công nên chúng ta không quan tâm nhiều đến khâu thiết kế, mà không quan tâm đến khâu thiết kế thì chúng ta sẽ khó có những sản phẩm để cạnh tranh" (Phạm N.H, n.d).
