Ở trường sư phạm,việc dạy tiếng mẹ đẻ không chỉ nhằm cung cấp cho người học những tri thức về ngôn ngữ học, về tiếng việt một cách đơn thuần, mà còn nhằm trang bị cho họ những kĩ năng cần thiết để hành nghề dạy học sau này. Thế nhưng về mặt này, lại đang có khá nhiều vấn đề.
Hiện nay có một thực trạng là ở trường sư phạm nhiều người dạy học tiếng việt chẳng cần quan tâm đến ở trường phổ thông người ta đang dạy những điều gì, mà người dạy ở trường phổ thông thì lại cảm thấy như ở trường sư phạm đã dạy cho họ những điều chẳng mấy thiết thực trong việc hành nghề. Người học khi còn ở trường sư phạm thì rối cả trí mà khi đã đi dạy thì chỉ biết lập lại một cách máy móc những nội dung đã được trình bày trong sách giáo khoa.
Sẽ không quá sớm để các nhà sư phạm về dạy học tiếng việt cùng ngồi lại với nhau xác lập một chuẩn tắc trong việc dạy tiếng mẹ đẻ, tạo liên thông giữa các cấp, các bậc học và thống nhất những nội dung kiến thức cơ bản về tiếng việt cần được giảng dạy trong nhà trường
