Nhiệt độ cao hơn là nguyên nhân làm cấu trúc dầu bôi trơn bị phá vỡ, mất khả năng bôi trơn. Các chi tiết động cơ khác cũng bị hư hỏng. Để phòng ngừa hiện tượng này người ta phải sử dụng hệ thống làm mát nhằm triệt tiêu một phần lượng nhiệt thừa, khoảng 1/3 lượng nhiệt sinh ra trong buồng đốt.
