Ngay sau khi chiếm Sài Gòn, Pháp đã cho lập nhà thờ để làm nơi hành lễ cho người Pháp theo đạo Công giáo. Ngôi nhà thờ đầu tiên được lập ở đường Số 5 (nay là đường Ngô Đức Kế). Đây vốn là một ngôi chùa nhỏ của người Việt bị bỏ hoang do chiến cuộc, linh mục Lefebvre đã tu sửa ngôi chùa này thành nhà thờ.
