Theo Bộ Tư pháp Mỹ, số tiền trong quỹ từ thiện của Leonardo DiCaprio đến trực tiếp từ hàng tỷ USD tham ô của các quan chức cấp cao Malaysia.

Mặc dù toàn bộ cáo buộc không trực tiếp nhắm đến DiCaprio, nhưng nam diễn viên vẫn bị nhắc đến nhiều lần trong tập tài liệu 136 trang, với từ ngữ ám chỉ “Nam diễn viên số 1 Hollywood”. Theo đó, các quan chức tham ô Malaysia đã được lợi trực tiếp từ việc thông qua 1MBD để chuyển tiền vào quỹ từ thiện do nam diễn viên sáng lập.
Ngoài ra, việc tập trung điều tra vào LDF cũng làm dấy lên nhiều câu hỏi về mối liên hệ mờ ám giữa tổ chức này với các nhân tố trong 1MBD. Sự thiếu minh bạch trong các cuộc giao dịch giữa 2 tổ chức cũng gây ảnh hưởng tới uy tín của DiCaprio, vì anh chính là người đã xây dựng mô hình hoạt động của tổ chức nói trên.
Được thành lập không phải với tư cách một tổ chức phi lợi nhuận, mà là dưới hình thức quỹ tư vấn quyên góp gắn liền với Quỹ Cộng đồng California, LDF vì thế không bị yêu cầu phải công khai toàn bộ thu nhập hay chi tiêu của họ.
