Quan họ là một loại hình dân ca phong phú về giai điệu. Quan họ được lưu truyền trong dân gian từ đời này sang đời khác qua phương thức truyền khẩu. Phương thức này là một yếu tố giúp cho Quan họ trở thành một loại hình dân ca có số lượng lớn bài hát với giai điệu khác nhau. Tuy nhiên, cũng chính phương thức này đã làm cho các bài Quan họ lưu truyền trong dân gian bị biến đổi nhiều, thậm chí khác hẳn so với ban đầu. Nhiều giai điệu cổ đã mất hẳn. Mặc dù sự thay đổi này cũng làm cho Quan họ phát triển, nhưng ở trong bối cảnh văn hóa Phương Tây đang xâm nhập mạnh mẽ vào Việt Nam, vấn đề bảo tồn Quan họ trong từng giai đoạn phát triển là việc làm cấp thiết.
