Để đảm bảo thực hiện hợp tác trong lĩnh vực đầu tư, Hiệp định khung về khu vực đầu tư ASEAN (AIA) đã được ký kết tạo AEM lần thứ 30 năm 1998. Theo quy định tại Điều 3, Hiệp định khung về khu vực đầu tư ASEAN, mục tiêu cơ bản của AIA là tạo một thị trường đầu tư thông thoáng và minh bạch hơn nhằm thúc đẩy ASEAN thành khu vực đầu tư hấp dẫn nhất, thu hút vốn đầu tư vào ASEAN, mục tiêu cơ bản của AIA là tạo ra một thị trường đầu tư thông thoáng và minh bạch hơn nhằm thúc đẩy ASEAN thành khu vực đầu tư hấp dẫn nhất, thu hút đầu tư vào ASEAN từ các nguồn trong và ngoài khu vực.
